What is CBD oil?

Let’s begin by answering some of the most-asked questions about the world of CBD, beginning with ‘what is CBD oil’? CBD oil is derived from the hemp or cannabis plant, and it belongs to a collection of over one hundred other cannabinoids that live in the plant. CBD is one of the most famous cannabinoids, as is Tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC. This is the main psychotropic cannabinoid in the plant, as consuming it can alter your state of mind.

However, CBD is well-regarded as a non-psychotropic compound, which is why it has found its way into public consciousness in the form of so many different products. So, how is CBD oil made? The CBD will first need to be extracted from the plant, and then diluted with a carrier oil so that you can consume it. Here at VAAY, we have made the conscious decision to use MCT oil from coconut in all of our CBD products. This is because MCT coconut oil boasts plenty of potential benefits, such as boosting mental performance, promoting heart health, protecting your hair and skin, and plenty more!

How to take CBD oil

There are so many different ways to consume CBD oil. For those of you with a decisive attitude, this won’t be a problem, but if you find making a decision tricky, then we’re with you – it can definitely feel overwhelming at times. The good news is that we aim to make the decision-making process as simple as possible for you. Here are the main ways that you can consume CBD oil:

CBD Oil / Tinctures

CBD oil and CBD tinctures remain two of the most popular ways to consume CBD, and it’s easy to see why. As we already know, CBD oil is diluted with a carrier oil; however, CBD tinctures will contain alcohol. This is to help the product to last longer, as the alcohol can act as a preservative. However, in comparison to CBD oil, there’s a lower CBD content on offer in tinctures. Both methods are simple to dose and use, which makes them so attractive to people – especially CBD newbies. Here at VAAY, we offer CBD oil in the form of a mouth spray. We recommend spraying a couple of pumps underneath your tongue (this is called sublingual application) as it speeds up the absorption process. We think you’ll all agree that a mouth spray is even more convenient to use than a pipette, and our MCT oil from coconut may even freshen your breath!

CBD Vape Pen

CBD vaping is the act of inhaling CBD-infused e-liquid through a vape pen. This is one of the quickest ways to feel the potential effects of CBD, as compounds inhaled through the lungs are absorbed into the bloodstream exceptionally quickly. In fact, it’s likely that you’ll be able to reap the potential benefits of CBD within five minutes. Here at VAAY, we like to make your already hectic lives easier, as all of our vape pens are pre-dosed for your convenience. Our pens are also pleasant to use, as you have a choice of delicious flavours, such as fruit, mint, herbal, and lemon. Vaping CBD can be done at home with no worry; however, you will still need to check the laws in your area concerning vaping CBD in public.

CBD Topicals

CBD topicals are anything that you apply to your skin, such as CBD-infused balm, moisturisers, creams, and so on. The CBD you apply will be absorbed through your skin, as opposed to your bloodstream, and therefore it can take up to one hour for you to feel the potential effects. If you’re working from home, then there’s no issue with using topical CBD; however, it’s a method that doesn’t exactly lend itself to applying on-the-go.

Regardless, relaxation and self-care are vital to a productive work life, and we think you’ll agree that this method of CBD consumption goes hand in hand with relaxation! Take our VAAY CBD Lavender Bath Bomb, for example. After a stressful working day, this is the ideal way to unwind and chill. All you need to do is place the CBD bath bomb into the water and watch it dissolve. The core of it will then be released, full of natural oils and 100mg of CBD. You can then cover yourself with the delectably scented core, tilt your head back, and breathe, enjoying the moment. Leave this core on your body for at least five minutes to allow the CBD to sink in. You will be left feeling relaxed and smelling like a field of lavender! After all, I think we can all agree that we can tick off our to-do list much more effectively when we feel content and well-rested.

CBD Capsules

Take a wild guess as to what CBD capsules are… yep, you got it in one – CBD in capsule form! You consume these like you would any other tablet or vitamin, swallowing them whole with some water. This is a simple and hassle-free way of adding CBD to your life, and this simplicity lends itself to consumption while you work. CBD capsules are also one of the easiest ways to dose CBD, and therefore to discover the dose that allows you to focus at your optimal level. They take a little longer to feel the effects in comparison to vaping and oils, as the CBD needs to travel through your liver and digestive system before it may be absorbed into your bloodstream.

CBD Edibles

We dare you to try resisting some of the tempting CBD-infused treats that are already out there. There’s pretty much anything that you can dream up – cookies, gummies, cocktails, chocolate, and so on. There are also some delicious healthy options for those of you watching what you eat, such as protein bars, smoothies, and dried fruit. The majority of CBD edibles are really handy for on-the-go consumption, which means that you can just pop them into your work bag, and you’re set to take on the day! CBD edibles aren’t exactly the fastest-acting form of CBD; however, if this isn’t a problem for you, then opt for a yummy CBD-infused snack today!

CBD for productivity – does it work?

So, what’s the current research looking like for CBD and productivity? Pretty good, in our humble opinion! There are many areas of CBD research that potentially indicate that it could contribute to helping you be productive and focused.

Catching plenty of zzz's

Let’s face it; the majority of us are seeking out restful sleep. So many lifestyle factors can negatively influence the quality of sleep that we get, such as interrupting children, uncomfortable mattresses, loud noises – you get the picture. Things can be frustrating and stressful, and will have a huge negative impact on your productivity the following day. The following phrases are seeing an increase in searches recently: ‘CBD oil for sleep’ and ‘how to use CBD oil for sleep’.

CBD oil for sleep is a well-researched area for the supplement, and things look promising. One study published in 2012 reported that a 160mg dose of CBD (in comparison to a placebo) was able to increase the duration of sleep. One review published in 2019 reported that cortisol (stress hormone) levels decreased after individuals consumed either 300 or 600mg of CBD oil. This indicates that CBD may be able to positively influence the cortisol hormone, and, as insomnia is linked to high levels of cortisol at night, reduced levels could lead to a more restful night’s sleep. Working your way into a consistent sleep schedule is vital for your productivity and improving your focus. A sleep schedule means going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day so that your body can get into a specific rhythm, and CBD may be able to help with this.

Pain

When it comes to CBD oil for pain, people find themselves asking many questions. For example, ‘how to take CBD oil for pain’ and ‘how long does it take CBD oil to work for joint pain’. Pain in any form can act as a massive distraction from your work and chores, and sometimes it can even prevent you from completing these tasks at all – and this can pile on the stress even more! Not a good cycle of events, right? Some people will take over the counter pain medication to try and manage their pain, but if you’re seeking a natural supplement to these medications, then consider using CBD oil. You see, there’s a growing body of research into the potential of CBD in pain management: one animal study published in 2016 examined the effects of topical CBD on rats with arthritis. The study lasted for four days, and during this time, the scientists applied either 0.6, 3.1, 6.2, or 62.3mg of CBD to the rat’s joints. The lower doses were not effective in controlling the pain, but 6.2mg or above was purportedly able to reduce the symptoms of pain, swelling, and inflammation in their joints. There were also no evident adverse side effects of CBD.

One review published in 2018 examined the way that CBD may be able to help in the management of chronic pain symptoms. It is generally thought that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is able to interact with CBD. There are endocannabinoid receptors in your immune system and brain, and the receptors can attach to your cells. This can then send out signals and influence how your cells respond to pain. Chronic pain refers to a type of pain that is near-constant, despite medical intervention, for example, back pain/ache. The review concluded that CBD was effective in the overall management of pain (specific to some conditions) and didn’t cause any adverse side effects in humans. While more human research is needed, the future looks promising for the use of CBD in pain management. So, the next time you’re struggling to focus due to your pain, why not reach for an all-natural CBD product?

Managing Anxiety and stress

Anxiety and stress can be both distressing and distracting to deal with, not just in your daily life, but especially when you’re trying to be productive. We’ve all been there, sat with your heart and mind racing wondering how on earth you’re going to complete all of your tasks for the day. Physical symptoms of anxiety and stress include feeling sick, dizzy, dry mouth, pins and needles, insomnia, shaking, trembling, and more awful things. Sometimes just the physical symptoms of stress alone can make you feel close to death!

Psychological symptoms can include feeling on edge, struggling to concentrate, and feeling irritable and restless. Before you let the tsunami of stress wash over you, consider using CBD. You see, CBD for anxiety is another growing body of research. For example, one study published in 2020 examined the effects of CBD on 397 people. These people all received a medical CBD prescription for varying issues, such as pain, anxiety, neurological symptoms, and more. Every group in this study reported a better quality of life following three weeks of treatment, in particular, those people dealing with anxiety and depression. After CBD, they reported seeing an improvement in being able to deal with their symptoms, as well as being able to perform daily tasks to an improved standard. Overall, 70% of people reported feeling ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ when asked how satisfied they thought of their CBD experience, with only 9.9% of people experiencing side effects like vivid dreams.

Another study pertaining to CBD and anxiety was published back in 2011. The researchers examined how CBD affected a group of people with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Half were given a placebo, and the other half an oral dose of 400mg of CBD. The results indicated that the CBD group experienced a lessening in their anxiety symptoms. Although further research is needed, CBD oil for anxiety remains one of the most promising areas of study. So, consider taking CBD before your big presentation at work, or when you have a big research paper due.

Cognitive performance

There may also be neurological benefits to consuming CBD, as this is a growing area of research. For example, one animal study published in 2014 examined the effects of CBD on Alzheimer’s disease. The results indicated that CBD may help people retain the ability to recognise people’s faces, as this ability is commonly lost in people with Alzheimer’s. One review that was published in 2019 reported that CBD might hold the potential to slow the progress and onset of symptoms of the disease, although more research is needed for more conclusive results. What’s more, CBD may be able to help improve memory, according to one study. Fifteen healthy adults took part in the study, and the researchers were either given one 600mg dose of oral CBD or a placebo. The researchers reported that in the CBD group, there was an increase in the cerebral blood flow to the areas of the brain (the hippocampus) that are specific to memory processing. They used an MRI test to establish the results, while the subjects were asked to count either backwards or forwards. The researchers concluded that CBD may hold the potential to help manage the symptoms of diseases associated with memory processing. Overall, while further research is needed to determine the dosage and efficacy of CBD for memory, this area of research seems to have a bright and exciting future. So, if you find yourself feeling sluggish while trying to work, consider taking CBD to potentially help impact your cognitive performance.

Other helpful tips for improving prodctivity

So, how else can you naturally increase your productivity? Let’s face it, CBD is not a magic potion – it won’t suddenly give you a burst of energy that allows you to get all of your tasks done at once (unfortunately). However, if you combine it with our top productivity tips below, then you’re certainly giving yourself a fighting chance.

  • Glug back the water (no, seriously): this probably seems like such a basic tip to you all by now. You’re probably used to seeing all kinds of articles claiming the water can make your hair shiny, your skin glow, your IQ ten times higher… but this time, we mean it. It’s backed up by scientific evidence that dehydration can cause dips in mood, concentration, and brain function. This should come as no surprise, after all, as the human body is made up of roughly 70% water! So, make sure that you’re drinking roughly eight glasses per day to improve your focus and productivity.
  • Take time for yourself: as we previously mentioned, self-care is vital for your productivity. Consider self-care as time well-spent, as you’re effectively allowing yourself time to recharge. This self-care could be dancing around to your favourite tunes, visiting new worlds by reading exciting novels, or eating your favourite treat. Not only will this impact your mood, but it also gives you something to look forward to after a long, stressful day. Here are some self-care tips to help you get started.
  • Get out: during one of your breaks, it’s a good idea to get outside and breathe some fresh air. This can help to boost your mood in general, and help you to get some much-needed vitamin D (depending on where you live, of course).
  • Minimise distractions: we’re looking at you Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Social media is everywhere, and that itself can be super distracting. One minute you’re scrolling, and the next thing you know, half an hour has passed! If your tasks allow it, we recommend putting away your phone while working and only checking it during breaks. Or, if this isn’t possible, then you could block notifications from certain apps. Trust us; you’ll thank yourself for it in the long run when you get all of your tasks done!
  • Know when to quit: this is such an important tip, and one not spoken about enough. If you’re genuinely zapped, then it’s time to walk away from the task at hand and acknowledge it’s not going well. You can always come back to the task later, or ask for help from your colleagues or friends (depending on what you’re up to). This can significantly lessen your stress, and you know what they say – a problem shared is a problem halved!

Final word

So, there you have it – how CBD may be able to help you to increase your productivity and concentration. Let’s face it, life is stressful sometimes, and there’s no getting away from that, but you can manage your workload in a healthy and productive way. There are so many ways for you to incorporate CBD into your life, and some of them are ideal for taking care of your mental well-being. Take our bath bomb, for example – it’s the perfect act of self-care at the end of the long day, and can leave you feeling ready to take on all your tasks the next day. As we have discovered, CBD alone won’t be able to make you productive – it’s all about living the best life that you possibly can, and the all-natural CBD easily lends itself to this. So, what are you waiting for? It’s high time for you to get to work!
